What To Expect at Every Stage of Your Labiaplasty Procedure and Recovery in Fredericksburg Virginia

Several very practical cosmetic and health concerns lead women to consider labiaplasty to reduce the size and improve the symmetry of their labial tissue. Labiaplasty, also known as labia reduction or labia surgery, reduces the protrusion of the labia and corrects asymmetry caused by aging or genetic factors, or more commonly, vaginal childbirth.

Since labia size and shape are as individual as eye color, there is a considerable variety to what is considered normal. However, when a woman’s labia, especially the labia minora (inner tissues of the female genitalia), are significantly elongated, the excess tissue can cause discomfort. Not only can they get in the way of everyday functions such as physical activities or the wearing of tight clothing, but they can also be subject to recurring hygiene issues and infections.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty surgery reduces the size of the labia minora (inner tissues of the female genitalia), making it flush with the labia majora (outer part of the female genitalia). During the labiaplasty procedure, your surgeon trims off the excess tissue. With this process, the lips of the labia minora can be tucked neatly within the labia majora. Depending on the patient’s surgical needs, the procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

Your Consultation

The first step in planning for the possibility of labiaplasty is to schedule an in-person consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery Services of Fredericksburg in Virginia. Now is the time to ask any questions you might have and to share your expectations and goals. Your surgeon will review your medical history and discuss any potential complications based on your health. You’ll also get to decide on any surgical techniques and preferences you might have for your results.

Your Candidacy for Labiaplasty

Any woman who is suffering from an enlarged or elongated labia minora is considered a good candidate for labiaplasty. Most women undergo labia reduction because they wish to eliminate physical discomfort. However, this surgery can also correct aesthetic concerns. Therefore, if you don’t like the appearance of your labia, you should feel free to consider the option of surgical correction.

Labiaplasty candidates must be:

  • In good overall health: Because post-surgical infection is a particular concern following labiaplasty, it’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle before and after your surgery.
  • Nonsmokers: Smoking interferes with the body’s ability to heal and increases a patient’s risk of complications, so if you smoke, you should quit for two weeks before and after your surgery.

Your Surgery

During labiaplasty, small incisions are made in the labia minora, and then the excess tissue is carefully removed either by trimming the labia or removing a small wedge. Next, the labia minora are carefully positioned to rest entirely within the labia majora before sutures are placed to facilitate healing. While this procedure is challenging due to the fragile nature of the tissues involved, it’s not a lengthy surgery. Most labiaplasty procedures take about one hour to complete.

After surgery, a friend or family member will be able to drive you home and help you with your recovery steps for the first few days. You will have been provided with instructions to follow and should make sure you’re prepared ahead of time with tasks like filling prescriptions, setting up a recovery area, and arranging childcare and your work schedule.

Your Recovery

It’s normal to experience some discomfort after your surgery. You will be given prescription pain medication and antibiotics to ensure that your recovery is both safe and comfortable. During recovery, you are advised to abstain from exercise for two weeks and sexual activity for six weeks. You should be able to return to work after two or three days but keep in mind that full recovery takes longer.

The pain is usually worst during the first few days but should gradually subside. Some swelling is to be expected during this time, and ice packs may be used to manage any swelling. Urinating may be a little uncomfortable, but using warm water on the area can lessen irritation and ease discomfort. It’s important to avoid sex during the recovery period.

To reduce your recovery time and help yourself get back on your feet faster, try the following tips:

  • Take your prescribed medication as needed and follow up with over counter pain medications
  • Use cold compresses to get some relief
  • Eat healthy and hydrate
  • Don’t smoke and avoid alcohol
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Lubricate to keep the sutures moist
  • Skip bathing, which could lead to infection or disturb your sutures
  • Walk around to reduce swelling and the chance of blood clots
  • Change your dressings and keep an eye out for signs of infection
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid chafing and pressure
  • Avoid constipation with a laxative to prevent straining

Benefits of Vaginal Rejuvenation You Never Knew

Plastic surgery is often regarded as making noticeable aesthetic changes to one’s appearance, such as tightening the skin for a facelift or increasing bust size during breast augmentation. However, there some aesthetic issues that go unnoticed to others but can still impact the way we feel, but most importantly our confidence.

The vagina is a sexual organ designed for pleasure but also childbirth. As women age, this organ loses its elasticity and youthful appearance, often affecting the way women feel when intimate with their partner, leading to embarrassment. Vaginal rejuvenation aims to rectify this loss of self-esteem by tightening vaginal tissue, helping women regain their sense attractiveness, and even boosting sexual pleasure.

Factors Affecting Vaginal Appearance

Vaginal rejuvenation is a term used to refer to reconstructive surgery of the outer lips (labia majora) and/or the inner lips of the vagina (labia minora) called labiaplasty. During childbirth, these structures stretch and contract to accommodate the passage of an infant, but the tissue may not always bounce back to the way it looked pre-childbirth.

Additional complaints women have due to loose vaginal tissue include increased pain during sexual intercourse, loss if vaginal tightness, and reduced sensitivity.

Age also plays a significant role in female dissatisfaction with their vaginal appearance. As women get older a natural reduction of the sex hormone estrogen occurs. This hormone is responsible for maintaining vaginal tightness, moisture, and elasticity. Over time, the taut appearance of the vagina may diminish due to this fact regardless if you have had children.

Benefits of Vaginal Rejuvenation

Labioplasty will tighten the tissue of the vagina by removing excess skin. By doing this, both you and your partner will benefit from increased stimulation that would have been lost otherwise, leading to greater sexual gratification and improved sex life. It can even help reduce pain caused by excess vaginal tissue being pulled into the vagina during intercourse.

The labia minora is normally situated behind the labia majora, but this is not always true for older women. When the labia minora protrudes forward, beyond the labia minora, it can give an aesthetically displeasing appearance. Labiaplasty can correct this, returning your vagina to its previously youthful look.

The clothing we choose to wear impacts the way we feel. Having loose vaginal tissue can lead to unwanted friction in the crotch area, making even wearing underwear an unpleasant experience. Women’s fashion is geared towards showcasing the female figure which leads to discomfort and irritation when wearing form-fitting clothing, such as bathing suits. Labiaplasty can reduce labia protrusion and reshape the vagina to mitigate this undesirable consequence.

Premature urination is a common issue facing older women, especially those who have had multiple vaginal births. Premature urination occurs when you are unable to adequately control the flow of urine, leading to unwanted leaks. By tightening the vaginal tissue, it makes it easier to hold on to urine and preventing untimely accidents.

What You Can Expect

Labioplasty is considered an outpatient procedure with most patients leaving the hospital to recoup at home the same day. Your vaginal area will feel sore and swollen for about a week, so it is recommended to wear loose clothing during to this to avoid excess pain. Using ice packs on the area as needed can also aid in relieving pain and swelling. Your doctor will also advise you to avoid using tampons, sex, and other vigorous activities for about four to six weeks post-procedure to ensure adequate healing.

May Is Mom’s Month … Time for a Mommy Makeover!

We’re continuing our celebration of moms all throughout May. They sacrifice so much for us and do so willingly, but one unfortunate thing many moms have given up is the body they used to love. Don’t despair, moms. We can help restore your pre-baby body with a Mommy Makeover. Wonderful children and a sexy body, too—who says you can’t have it all?

Has Pregnancy Changed Your Body?

Being a mom is filled with sacrifices, but your body doesn’t have to be one of them. Many women experience unwanted changes to their body and appearance during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, including:

  • Breast Changes– The breasts may become larger or smaller and often develop sagging.
  • Unwanted Fat Deposits– Hormone changes can lead to stubborn fat pockets in areas like the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, etc.
  • Stretch Marks– Stretch marks are common after pregnancy due to the quick expansion of the abdomen.
  • Loose Abdominal Skin– Abdominal skin and muscles can be stretched out, resulting in a post-baby belly that is difficult to tighten up, even when you return to your pre-pregnancy weight.
  • Changes to Genitalia– Changes to the labia and vagina are common. Some women experience discomfort, especially during exercise.

If pregnancy changed your body, a Mommy Makeover may be able to reverse some of those changes. Say goodbye to post-baby belly and sagging breasts!

Is My Mommy Makeover Customized to My Needs?

A Mommy Makeover is highly customizable, designed to meet your unique needs and desires. During your consultation, we’ll examine your body, discuss your goals, and offer treatment recommendations. We may recommend procedures like breast augmentation, a breast lift, a tummy tuckliposuction, etc. These surgeries can often be combined, reducing the amount of time you’ll need to spend in recovery.

Everyone should love their bodies—especially mothers! Schedule your Mommy Makeover consultation today by calling 540-371-7730.

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Labiaplasty but Were Afraid to Ask

Ladies—let’s get personal. We’re going to answer some of the questions we know you have, but feel too embarrassed to ask. Let’s talk labiaplasty!

My Labia Are Longer and Stretched Out After Pregnancy/Childbirth. What Can I Do?

Pregnancy and childbirth can change the appearance of the labia, sometimes leaving them stretched out or larger than they were before. Labiaplasty is the solution. This procedure can improve the appearance of the labia and resize them if they are large or stretched out. It is often performed on women with naturally large labia, women who are unhappy with the changes to their body after pregnancy/childbirth, and women who want to rejuvenate the appearance of their genitals.

Running Is Uncomfortable Down There. Could Labiaplasty Help?

Labiaplasty isn’t just a cosmetic procedure. Some women opt for the surgery due to discomfort they experience from rubbing and chafing, especially during exercise. Labiaplasty may help you to feel more comfortable when running, biking, or participating in other sports. For many women, labiaplasty boosts self-confidence while relieving pain and discomfort.

What Does Labiaplasty Surgery Entail?

Labiaplasty transforms the appearance of the labia, most frequently the labia minora (or the inner lips surrounding the entrance to the vagina). It can resize, correct asymmetry, etc. This makes the labia more aesthetically pleasing and alleviates any discomfort or irritation you may be experiencing. The surgery is typically performed using local anesthetic or IV sedation, and is on an outpatient basis in our accredited surgery center.

What’s Recovery Like After Labiaplasty?

You’ll need to refrain from sexual activity for several weeks but, other than that, most women find the recovery to be easy with little downtime. We will provide tips, advice, and/or medication to minimize your discomfort during recovery.
