Brachioplasty is surgery to excise loose redundant tissue and skin of the upper arm. This is often referred to as a "bat-wing deformity," which describes the hanging or flapping excess skin that may be present. Individuals may have complaints of being reluctant to wear sleeveless or short-sleeved clothing, as they consider their loose upper arms unattractive and cumbersome. It may also be difficult to find clothing with sleeves that fit well if the upper arm is not proportional to the lower arm or chest.

The ideal candidate for brachioplasty has deflated upper arms from loss of elasticity or weight loss. Weight should be stable for anyone who has lost significant weight so that the extent of the deformity can be identified. The individual must also be willing to accept significant scars on the upper arms.
